Who are Xenopus ?

Xenopus is a genus of African frogs belonging to the family Pipidae. The species of this genus are distinguished by their adaptations to an aquatic habitat: the body is flattened dorsoventrally, and the hind legs are webbed, allowing for efficient swimming. Lacking a mobile tongue, these frogs capture their prey by creating a water current into their mouths.

Their smooth skin and tolerance to changing conditions make them ideal subjects for scientific research, particularly in studies of embryonic development. Their rapid growth—from tadpoles to frogs in just a few weeks—makes them ideal models for understanding developmental processes. Xenopus laevis are commonly used as model organisms to study embryonic development, cell biology, neurobiology, and other fields of biomedical research.
